Regarding the statement that "the ādānavijñāna is profoundly deep and subtle": Jing says, "For bodhisattvas before the stages and others not to understand it is called 'profoundly deep'; for the two vehicles not to comprehend it is called 'profoundly subtle'." Ji says, "The old claim that both the seventh and eighth [consciousnesses] are called ādāna is incorrect. That is, the verse in the old treatise says: 'The appropriating consciousness (執持識) is deep and subtle.' Since it says 'appropriating and holding', how could the seventh be capable of holding? The Sanskrit says kliṣṭamanas, translated here as 'defiled mind' (染污意); what is now called ādāna precisely bears the meaning of the eighth [consciousness's] appropriating and holding."
