From here below, the second part resolves causes and conditions (hetu-pratyaya); that is, the third fascicle of the Viniścaya on the Mental Stage states: "Furthermore, there are four conditions, etc." In this there are two parts: first, correctly resolving the four conditions; second, distinguishing the meaning of the mind arising with non-existence as condition. In the former there are three parts: first, stating the topic; second, explaining it; third, comparing the inclusions and exclusions among the two causes, the ten causes, and the four conditions. In explaining causes and conditions there are two parts: first, explaining causes and conditions based on the Buddha's teachings prior to the establishment of the ālaya[vijñāna]; second, clarifying the characteristics of establishing causes and conditions according to the teachings after [the establishment of] the ālaya. In the former there are three parts: first, correctly distinguishing causes and conditions; second, clarifying the meaning of suppression, severance, regression, and non-regression; third, clarifying seeds accompanying the stages of the three feelings and so forth. In the former, first, correctly distinguishing causes and conditions; second, counter-challenging outsiders. In the former, first, the question; second, the explanation; third, the conclusion.
