The commentary says: The phrase 'appropriating and holding' is correct in meaning, yet there is a difference in what it excludes; the meanings do not exclude the same things. Why is this? Previously saying 'deep and subtle' only excluded ordinary beings and had not yet excluded the two vehicles, because the meanings relied upon by ordinary beings are all coarse and shallow. If here it says 'deep and subtle' and only excludes ordinary beings, the teachings of the two vehicles are all deep and subtle and this would be equal to them; therefore, 'profoundly' (甚) is now used to distinguish the two vehicles, because the scriptural teachings of the two vehicles are deep and subtle, but not profoundly so. Because this exclusion is complete, it must be different. Therefore, it says below that only the noble ones who see the truth are able to know it, while the rest are not yet able to know it. Prior to the path of seeing, the sixth consciousness performs the contemplation of consciousness-only and has not yet seen the eighth; entering [the path of] seeing, one only then knows it. Therefore it is said to be 'profoundly deep and subtle'.
