(Ce says:) The name ādāna is explained through three meanings: First, it is called appropriation in the sense of holding onto (執持), meaning it is able to hold the seeds of names, characteristics, and the like so that they are not lost. Second, it is called appropriation in the sense of appropriating and experiencing (執受), meaning it is able to appropriate the physical sense faculties and their bases, causing sensation to arise. Third, it is called appropriation in the sense of grasping (執取), meaning it is able to grasp rebirth in continuous succession. Sentient beings lacking the nature [for liberation] cannot fathom its depths, hence it is said to be 'profoundly deep'; those of the gotra destined for quietude cannot penetrate it, hence it is called 'profoundly deep'—this is as explained in the Vijñaptimātratā[siddhi]. If one relies on Vasubandhu, 'deep and subtle' are explained together; hence his treatise says: 'Profoundly deep and subtle, because it is difficult to know', without assigning them to different gotras. If one relies on Asvabhāva, it says: 'Profoundly deep' means that its depth is difficult to fathom by the wisdom perceived by the worldly wise; 'profoundly subtle' means that it is difficult to know for the śrāvakas and others. Now, examining the old translation, it differs in textual character from the present text. As the Bodhisattva *Mati-līna's (?) Manokarmamīmāṃsāśāstra says: 'The World-Honoured One, in the Mahāyāna Saṃdhinirmocanasūtra, spoke of the ādāna mind-consciousness: Deep and subtle beyond measure, with immeasurable seeds, their number like drops of rain; I do not explain this teaching to ordinary beings, not because I am possessive, but out of fear that they will further construct a self.'
