Regarding "all seeds [flow] like a torrent": this single line presents the meaning of the eighth consciousness being deep and subtle, on account of which it is not taught; this is the first reason why it is not taught, namely, its depth and subtlety. Master Jing says: "The Laṅkā[vatārasūtra] says that the ādānavijñāna is the tathāgatagarbha because, based on the fact that the ālaya-consciousness possesses a single seed of affliction, it is able to conceal that tathāgata dharmakāya and is thus called tathāgatagarbha; furthermore, within the ālaya there are taintless seeds of that tathāgata capable of containing many fruits, and it is thus called tathāgatagarbha. It also says that there are eight or nine various kinds of consciousnesses, referring generally to all consciousnesses, distinguishing nine grades of consciousness, without intending to argue that consciousness has eight or nine separate kinds." (Ji says:) "When water is not struck by the wind, it is called a calm flow; only when it encounters wind and waves do surges rise up. This consciousness is also like this: when the wind of active perfuming has not stirred, it is merely a calm flow thought-moment by thought-moment; when the wind of active perfuming stirs, it forms seeds and immediately becomes like waves; or, seeds giving rise to actualities is like waves: when the cause of a single wave arrives, a single wave arises; when the causes of many waves arrive, many waves rise up."
