The Tripiṭaka Master says: The divine eye and divine ear superknowledges are not neutral states of bodily deportment, but the fruit of superknowledge. Furthermore, when skipping concentrations, entering in direct order from the first dhyāna up to Neither-Perception-Nor-Non-Perception, pausing for a long time or turning to perform other contemplations, this is simply named entering in direct order; thereafter, relying on the fundamental contemplation and subsequently entering the lower concentrations in reverse order, this is named entering in reverse order. Propositions such as direct-reverse and reverse-direct are all logically established; it is not necessary to emerge into a dispersed mind for it to be accomplished. When an arhat skipping concentrations regresses and gives rise to afflictions of the formless realm, they enter afflictions from a concentration of the category of abiding. According to this explanation, when a person is in a lower stage, they do not give rise to the innate wholesome mind of a higher stage.
