Tai says: There are three kinds of attainment: first, the seed is that which attains, and the phenomena of the three natures to be produced are that which is attained; second, the seeds of expedient wholesomeness and transformation are that which attains, and the minds of expedient wholesomeness, transformation, and unrecorded states to be produced are that which is attained—these are all attainments prior to the phenomenon; third, the aforementioned phenomena when directly manifesting before one are that which is attained, and the aforementioned seeds together with the attained phenomena are both named attainment of manifest activity—these are all the attainment of phenomena by attainment. If the variously manifested seeds are taken as that which is attained, then the functional capacity of the fundamental consciousness to appropriate seeds is that which attains; this is an attainment having attainment subsequent [to it]. Furthermore, because seeds manifest, this is also the attainment of manifest activity. Again, if earlier seeds are succeeded by later seeds, this is also spoken of as the maturation of seeds and the maturation of manifest activity.
