The commentary says: Although teaching that eighth [consciousness] may give rise to grasping of phenomena, the elimination of grasping of phenomena must depend on consciousness-only. Since the eighth is the real causal condition of all phenomena, this is the very basis of consciousness-only; therefore, for those of great faculties, the fundamental consciousness may be taught. As for the meaning of this consciousness: the Buddha's preaching of the Dharma takes benefiting sentient beings as its foundation; if teaching this Dharma ensures that initially one does not fall into saṃsāra and ultimately one is able to attain nirvāṇa, then the Buddha teaches it. However, if ordinary beings hear of this consciousness, they give rise to conceptual construction of the two selves; and if the two vehicles hear of it, they give rise to grasping of phenomena and cannot perform the contemplation of consciousness-only; thus initially there is harm, and ultimately there is no benefit.
