Now one should formulate the syllogism: 'When an ordinary worldling gives rise to wholesome and other states of mind, they must have the view of self (thesis)—this has a qualification and should be considered—because of being an ordinary worldling (reason), just like at the time of giving rise to the view of self in other states (example).' The meaning of these three kinds of activities having already been established, they must constantly exist at all times. If the activity regarding an object arises, there must be four; otherwise, there are only the former three. The activity of cognizing objects is mutually accepted by the two vehicles, and since the meaning of the former three activities has already been established, therefore at all times the four activities are obtainable. Formulating a general syllogism for the former three activities: 'In the body of an ordinary worldling, when undefiled mind and the like are manifest, the former three kinds of activities exist (thesis), because of the state of being an ordinary worldling (reason), just like when the three kinds of cognition mutually accepted by both are manifest (example).' Through this reasoning, the four activities can be known. Establishing the previous consciousness-only by reason is correct.
