If one asserts that it has mind, one should formulate a refuting syllogism: 'The sixth mental consciousness should not exist in states such as the concentration of non-conception (thesis), because in this state it is subsumed by any one among the six consciousnesses (reason), just like the five consciousnesses and so forth (example).' Furthermore, if there is consciousness, there is definitely contact; if there is contact, there must be feeling and conceptualization. How could one say this concentration has consciousness? Once this syllogism is established, the Hīnayāna attachment is refuted; since it contradicts scripture and reason, the eighth is established. Also, consider syllogisms such as that there should be a concentration of cessation in the formless realm.
