Seventh, explaining the persons who attain the absorption. Therein, it first explains that the bodily witness among those in training and the doubly-liberated among those beyond training are able to enter this absorption, and thereafter comparatively differentiates that the absorption of non-conception is not entered by noble ones. Ji says: The absorption of cessation is taintless and does not induce retribution; however, persons who have not yet separated from desire for the fourth dhyāna also attain it. Now, this is based on those who have severed afflictions, not discussing those who merely suppress afflictions. Yet older treatises say: Thirteen kinds of persons attain it, namely, those with complete bonds, the eight paths of liberation, arhats, pratyekabuddhas, and the Tathāgata; now according to the Mahāyāna, bodhisattvas who have entered the bhūmis also attain it. Although persons of the fourth [dhyāna] who suppress afflictions attain it, what prevents them from still being subsumed under those with complete bonds? The absorption of non-conception is entered neither by those in training nor those beyond training, because there is no active operation of wisdom. Tai says: When attaining the retribution of non-conception, there is no active operation of wisdom. Jing says: When entering the absorption of non-conception, because in the preliminary expedient there is no taintless mind, it is called 'no active operation of wisdom.' As for 'quiet abiding and rebirth': it means the absorption of cessation is the abiding, and the four formless abodes are the rebirth; because the absorption of cessation possesses superior abiding and rebirth, the noble ones do not enter the absorption of non-conception, nor are they reborn in the heaven of non-conception; furthermore, because this absorption cannot realize the superior dharmas not yet attained and lingers in illusory places, the noble ones do not enter it.
