In explaining "abiding": Jing's Supplement says: The consciousnesses of the desire realm mostly grasp the external form of the five sense-objects, which is called abiding in form; the consciousnesses of the form realm cling to the internal five aggregates, which is called abiding in both; the mental consciousness of the formless realm abides solely in the names of those four aggregates. Ji says: The desire realm is restricted to external objects because, through habituation to desire, there is much greed toward objects; furthermore, although love and abiding are also generated toward the internal body, because it is born through womb, egg, and so forth, it is not an intense abiding. Now discussing it based on the predominant: the form realm is explained solely in terms of the internal body, because beings are born by transformation and do not habituate desire; the formless realm only discusses abiding in names produced by karma, not discussing forms transformed by meditative absorption—this is the meaning of this text. Now when it says "grasping," it means cognizing and grasping, not appropriation, because names are not that which is appropriated.
