The Tripiṭaka Master says: By using the four supports of grasping as the objective reliance, consciousness is caused to abide peacefully in form and so forth, and so on at length. Now it is said that the four are the fruits of consciousness, and relying on them one pursues grasping; by using these as the objective reliance, consciousness is caused to abide peacefully. Two meanings are contained within "intentional object": if in the sense of an objective reliance, it applies to both internal and external; if in the sense of an object-condition, it also applies broadly, but the textual meaning is not as apt as the condition of an objective reliance. Regarding "in this very life, one must be detached from desire, shadow, and so forth": the meaning is that because a noble disciple cultivates and frequently cultivates, in this very life they can sever the four bodily ties; the four bodily ties are produced only by discrimination in the mental stage, hence they are severed at the time of the path of seeing. These four desires are the yearning for future bodies and so forth. "Shadow" is feeling (and so forth).
