Why is this? "Because there is certainly none who, solely toward the nature of consciousness, gives rise to defiled craving as toward form and so on": the nature of consciousness is subtle; one cannot perceive consciousness and cannot give rise to defiled craving toward it. The essence of the aggregate of form is coarse, and the perceptual understanding of the aggregates of feeling, conception, and formations is coarse; hence, cognizing them gives rise to defiled craving. Even if there are those who give rise to defiled feeling toward consciousness, it must depend on form and so on before defilement toward consciousness occurs. These four stations of consciousness are mostly analyzed with respect to consciousness; the six consciousnesses that are capable of abiding, and the three associated aggregates together with form, act as what is abided in; they do not discuss the manas's craving for the ālayavijñāna as an objection.
