In the re-examination of the ten pairs, it says there are three grades: first, the grade of those who have not yet set out toward meditative absorption, referring to persons in the Desire Realm who have not yet sought meditative absorption; second, the grade of those who, although having set out, have not attained meditative absorption, that is, persons who seek meditative absorption but have not attained it; third, persons who have already attained meditative absorption. This latter comprises two kinds: first, impure, referring to having suppressed afflictions and attained the threshold absorption; second, utterly pure, referring to having attained the root absorption.
