Regarding "Relying on seven bases, the four aggregates operate, etc.": Ji says: What is the difference between desire and hope? The first is toward an object already attained, and the second is toward an object not yet attained; that is, taking future and past objects as conditions according to what is appropriate. "Objective sphere" refers to the objective sphere present and spontaneous. As for "investigation and reflection," although the above various scriptures also have investigation and reflection, their functions are distinct: investigation and reflection only deliberate on objects not yet attained or already attained, whereas when investigation and reflection arise, [the others] do not arise. Furthermore, "desiring and hoping for union, etc." means longing for union. "Those who have gone forth in this Desire Realm" means they are subsumed under this objective sphere of investigation and reflection; "those who enjoy desires" rely on four bases; "those who abide in discipline" rely on correct awareness; "those who have attained threshold absorption" rely on pure skillful means; "those who abide peacefully in root absorption" rely on purity. The above completes the distinction of aggregates by means of the six meanings in skill in the aggregates.
