Forms falling under the base of phenomena (dharmāyatana) are of two kinds: when it says 'if it is the sphere of samādhi endowed with authority, like transformations, etc.', Bei and Jing both say: The spheres of the concentrated mind of the noble ones of the three vehicles—meaning when practicing the contemplation of the eight totalities (kṛtsnāyatana) they appear before the mind—these are real existents. Serving as a condition, they cause others to see for themselves the mental manifestation of the eight aspect components (nimittabhāga); just as the mind of transformation produces transformed form and serves as a condition for others, also causing others to see the form transformed by themselves. Form manifested in samādhi is the fruit of the samādhi mind; the latter is what is cognized by samādhi and is called the object; therefore it is said 'that fruit, that object'. Question: Since the sphere of samādhi is the base of phenomena, how can it be seen by others' eyes? Answer: Serving as an empowering condition (adhipatipratyaya) it causes others to transform it themselves, and thus the eye consciousness sees it; it does not mean causing others to see the form of the base of phenomena.
