The fourth section explains that through five conditions, fruit becomes transformed. Just as when planting crops, if water and manure are harmonized and human skill is added, the fruit produced is superior. (1) Meeting conditions such as wind and frost, the fruit all suffers illness, and its color and flavor change, which is called 'the power of the great elements'; (2) through human cultivation, the fruit has no defects, which is called 'the power of human causes'; (3) through vidyā-mantras, or casting a spell on trees to make them wither and die—there are non-Buddhists skilled in mantras who cast spells causing withered fruit; (4) through supernormal transformation, changing the good into bad or changing the bad into good; (5) following past karmic retribution, relying on that person's type, the fruit transforms accordingly.
