Tai says: The first three branches abandon transgressions by nature and are therefore called 'abandoning evil conduct'; the latter four branches do not abandon transgressions by nature, but merely abandon those arising from ornaments and objects of the five desires, and are therefore called 'abandoning conduct of sensual desire'. Unchaste conduct is an evil conduct that is a transgression by nature. Furthermore, conduct of sexual desire and abandoning it is called 'conduct of mutual abandonment'. Because in the third [state of life] one cannot cultivate the conduct of mutual abandonment conclusively for one's whole life, one should only diligently take up mutual abandonment for a day and night as the cause for mutual abandonment for the rest of one's life. Do not say of oneself that, being suppressed by the heavy burden of household life, one cannot undertake the proximate fruition-abiding that serves as the cause for the conduct of mutual abandonment and the lifelong precepts of mutual abandonment; hence it is called 'proximate abiding'.
