Third, impairment of the male faculty: namely, ṣaṇḍhas, paṇḍakas, and the like; this falls under difficulties. Furthermore, regarding 'a paṇḍaka has three: 1. complete, 2. partial, 3. damaged, etc.': Tai says: A paṇḍaka is one lacking the male disposition and delighting in others committing wrongdoing upon oneself. A ṣaṇḍha means lacking the faculty. The first paṇḍaka possesses both meanings. The second paṇḍaka has the faculty but lacks the male disposition, delighting in wrongdoing, and is therefore solely called a paṇḍaka; because of having the faculty, it is not a ṣaṇḍha. The third, because of lacking the faculty, is solely a ṣaṇḍha; having originally had faculties and been mutilated by others, with the male disposition unaltered and not delighting in others committing wrongdoing, it is therefore not a paṇḍaka. If, after being damaged, one loses the male disposition and delights in others committing wrongdoing like a female, one is called both a paṇḍaka and a ṣaṇḍha.
