Fifth, explaining the distinctions: there are three grades. Jing says: Having cultivated the lower grade, the retribution is not definitely attained; relying on such a person, Fascicle 62 states: 'The absorption without conceptualization first arises here, and later arises anew in the physical body; relinquishing the body of the higher stage, one only then receives that retribution'—this is retribution in the next birth (upapatti-vedanīya). As explained in Hīnayāna texts such as the Kośa, the absorption without conceptualization is the retribution in the next birth produced by its cause, and the retribution is definitely attained. Second, initial arising: if in the desire realm one hears non-Buddhist teachings and cultivates the absorption without conceptualization, one immediately attains the liberation of nirvāṇa without conceptualization; at that time one immediately gives rise to desire-realm hearing and reflection as an expedient for entering absorption; such hearing and reflection serve as the cause producing subsequent retribution in the human or deva realms; if one also gives rise to wrong view at that time, slandering and denying the nirvāṇa realized by the Śākyan lineage, this serves as the cause producing subsequent retribution in the miserable realms; after this, one enters the first dhyāna up to the fourth dhyāna, and within the fourth dhyāna wishes to give rise to the nine grades of weary mind to seek the absorption without conceptualization, but before attaining it, one is suddenly struck by another's teaching or dies of one's own sickness; after death, one is reborn in the heaven of Great Fruit (Bṛhatphala) in the fourth dhyāna and attains knowledge of past lives: 'I cultivated the absorption without conceptualization in the lower realm and had not attained it; because of the end of my life I came to be born here,' and thereupon one cultivates and attains that absorption there—this is called initial arising in the form realm; if in the lower realm one cultivates and attains it without obstacle, it is called initial arising in the desire realm.
