Ji says: Question: The seed of mind guards against mind, yet the substance of absorption is neither matter nor mind; the seed of matter guards against matter, yet the substance of precepts is neither mind nor matter? Answer: The seed of matter guards against matter; the substance of the seed being matter, it is neither matter nor mind; the seed of mind guards against mind; the substance of the seed not being mind, it is called neither mind nor matter. Question: If by matter one guards against matter, the seed of matter is still called matter; if by mind one guards against mind, is the seed of mind not non-matter? Answer: The matter guarded against by the seed of mind has its seed substance included under matter. If so, as for the mind guarded against by the seed of mind, should the seed of mind be subsumed under mind? Answer: The seed of matter guards against the arising of non-wholesome matter; the precept established based on the seed is precisely matter; the seed of the weary mind also guards against mind, and no distinct mind arises, therefore it is neither mind nor matter. Question: The seed of matter is said to guard against error; the seed of matter is called the arising of wholesome matter; the seed of mind, with mind, guards against conceptualization; will the seed of conceptualization later continually be said to produce mind? Answer: The substance of mind inherently takes objects and conceptualizes; the seed of conceptualization has no cognitive object and is therefore not mind; spoken of from the perspective of what is guarded against, it is matter; the seed of volition has the function of guarding, and is therefore subsumed under matter.
