The import of the answer: Prior to the path of seeing, when first cultivating expedients, one first gives rise to the samādhi of the wishless regarding impermanence and suffering, and later cultivates the samādhi of emptiness regarding non-self, its entity being cultivated in dependence on non-cessation as that emptiness. Again, from non-self one gives rise to the aspect of practice of impermanence, which means cultivating the wishless in dependence on that emptiness. The wishless and emptiness are reciprocally and alternately cultivated with one another before and after. The earlier mention of emptiness first among the sixteen aspects of practice is based on having already cultivated and attained the aspect of practice of emptiness and non-self, and next giving rise to suffering, impermanence, and so forth; hence emptiness is stated first and the wishless is stated later.
