Ji says: If considered according to reality, this faith applies to both the tainted and the taintless, but here it is spoken of only in terms of the superior taintless one. How is this known? Because wisdom arisen from hearing is spoken of within what is tainted; hence, prior to wisdom arisen from reflection, the initial mind that observes the teaching is wisdom arisen from hearing first, so here tainted [faith] is concealed when discussing wisdom arisen from hearing. If so, why is wisdom arisen from hearing not established separately? The meaning is: if based on the initial observation of the truths, faith must be the guide, and thus the functioning of faith is superior; in terms of discerning dharmas being superior, wisdom arisen from reflection is superior. Therefore, relying only on faith and reflection, wisdom arisen from hearing is subsumed within faith. Wisdom arisen from cultivation applies to both the tainted and the taintless; the superior taintless one is subsumed under [the clear realization of] the truths through knowledge and so forth. What about the tainted one? Just as explained regarding wisdom arisen from hearing, because its function is not predominant, it is also subsumed within faith; yet we have not seen explicit text for this. As for wisdom arisen from hearing being in faith, one takes this text as proof. That is, it takes the two dharmas of hearing and faith as its essence; however, because the meaning of faith is initially predominant, hearing is explained in terms of faith. Here, [the clear realization of] the truths through knowledge and so forth are discussed only with respect to the initial attainment on the path of seeing. However, in the text below there are also the superior path and so forth, which are collectively called ultimate realization up to the stage of no-more-learning.
