Regarding "the distinctions herein up to subsumed under sound, subsumed under syllable": Jing says: The Sanskrit work Chandoviciti is translated here as "general designation of vocal sounds." When a bodhisattva teaches the Dharma, there are three kinds: male, female, and neither voice. Among the three voices, one must complete two long and two short tonal meters for the rhythm to be sufficient; this fulfillment of a phrase is called "subsumed under sound." In the syntax of the Western countries, four syllables are required to make one phrase; names and syllables subsume phrases. These four kinds all explain the meaning of a phrase.
