基云：句有二種：謂總標、別釋。台字，有二種：謂本音十四，即囊阿等。字：謂三十四字，迦劫迦等。又音所攝，即闡陀那論，有男女等各有七轉方成音，文字所攝，即謂言音字。

Ji says: Phrases are of two kinds: general heading and specific explanation. Syllables are of two kinds: the fourteen primary vowels, namely a and so forth; consonants, namely thirty-four consonants, ka, kha, and so forth. Furthermore, "subsumed under sound" refers to the Chandoviciti treatise; there are masculine, feminine, and so forth, each with seven case inflections to form a tone. "Subsumed under written syllable" refers to the spoken and written syllables.
