Differentiating various objective domains on the basis of spoken names: just as hearing others speak the names of conditioned formations, the four aggregates differentiate phenomena on the basis of names; thus, by virtue of the spoken names upon which they rely, the four aggregates are called name. One should know that this is specifically based on the four aggregates of mental consciousness differentiating according to name; it is also possible that, through this mental consciousness differentiating according to name, it induces the four aggregates simultaneous with the five consciousnesses to differentiate the five dusts. If one relies on this meaning, the four aggregates of the six consciousnesses differentiate their objects on the basis of spoken names; the seventh and eighth consciousnesses, however, cannot be said to differentiate objective domains on the basis of spoken names, but only have thinking names; because thinking names do not necessarily rely on spoken names, thinking about phenomena merely relies on one's own mind clearly presenting the object.
