In the first part, first, discriminating the characteristics of elements: “If the eye is not severed, or if it is already severed and sustained by the life-faculty…” The Tripiṭaka Master said: For ordinary beings and those in training, it is called the eye not being severed; the eye of those beyond training is called already severed, yet being sustained by the life-faculty, it is able to abide in continuity. In actual principle, it is sustained by the ālaya[-vijñāna]; regarding the life-faculty according to the principle of following its turning, it is spoken of as sustained by the life-faculty; up to a portion of the dharma-element that is defiled dharmas, all are likewise. Another explanation: The eye in the state where afflictions are not severed and the eye in the state where they are severed are sustained by the ālaya[-vijñāna], which is the substantial entity of the life-faculty; designating the real by the nominal, it is therefore called the life-faculty.
