The third fascicle of the Abhidharma states: “Among those six faculties, three grasp without reaching [their objects], namely the eye, ear, and mind; three grasp upon reaching [their objects], namely the remaining faculties.” This is based on the mental consciousness: although it arises together with the five consciousnesses, it does not rely on the five faculties; therefore, unlike the two consciousnesses grasping the three sense objects upon contact, it is called capable of grasping without reaching. One should say that the mental consciousness is said to be neither distant nor upon contact: because it does not rely on the five faculties, it is neither distant nor upon contact with respect to the five sense objects and the mental-object (dharma) sense object. If according to the Sarvāstivādins: if taking a cognitive object is called reaching, all six faculties reach; if it means grasping a cognitive object without an interval, then three reach and three do not reach.
