Next, [the text] explains auxiliary companions: the mental consciousness that grasps objects, and the mental factors of the mental consciousness, do not rely on the five faculties, and hence are called 'independently capable of grasping'; yet in truth they also rely on manas as a faculty and auxiliary companion in order to grasp.
