Among the two kinds, the support (āśraya) refers to the six faculties. The faculties have an order, meaning the eye comes first, and so on. The cognitive fields are the six objects; why do they have an order? It means form, sound, and so forth. What relies on both is consciousness; consciousness arises relying on both those faculties and objects, and in accordance with the faculties and those objects, its order is established. Among the eighteen elements, the six consciousnesses are able to arise relying on the six faculties and taking the six objects as conditions; therefore, the six faculties are generated, next the six objects are stated, and afterwards the six consciousnesses are stated; hence it is called 'three kinds'. The text below beginning with 'Why is this?' explains the meaning of 'relying on both'.
