Twelfth, explaining that although the eye, ear, and nose consciousnesses arise based on two [organs], the substance of each consciousness is only single. The meaning is that if one eye is impaired, consciousness is immediately not lucid; therefore we know that a single consciousness relies on two eyes. Furthermore, consciousness is not material and lacks spatial extension; it cannot be divided into three parts. This refutes the Vātsīputrīyas, Sthaviras, and others who hypothesize that two eyes can successively produce a single consciousness.
