Ce says: The eye has three meanings: first, eye; second, eye āyatana; third, eye-contact āyatana. All present eyes are collectively called "eye." Only when able to produce a subsequent eye are they called "eye āyatana." Therefore, the subsequent eye of an arhat, and the final eye and so forth when dying in the desire or form realms to be born in the formless realm, are none of them called āyatanas. When the treatise says: "In its substance immediately without interval, it is not a broken-off dharma," the intention lies here.
