Within the former: first, the observation that the arising of the six sense bases is the previous result of suffering; due to delusion regarding this suffering, the seven branches beginning with ignorance arise. Second, the current arising of the feeling branch; due to craving for this feeling, the three kinds of productive causes—craving, grasping, and existence—arise; hence it is the basis of the productive cause. Third, the previous seven branches. Fourth, craving, grasping, and existence. Fifth, the future two branches. Thus the twelve branches arise mutually as cause and effect in unbroken succession. Here, the twelve branches are explained as three portions: first, the initial seven are the inducing causes; second, the next three are the productive causes; third, the future two branches are the results of the previous two—the inducing and productive causes. The Abhidharma divides them into four: dividing the initial seven into the 'able to induce' and 'induced', and the latter five into the 'able to produce' and 'produced'.
