The 'middling grade' refers to mundane stabilized wholesome [factors] and those taintless ones that can abandon middling afflictions; the superior grade refers to supramundane wholesome roots that abandon inferior afflictions. Furthermore, regarding 'all wholesome dharmas, either through the power of application, etc.': Jing says: Diligently cultivating application close to this life to achieve the superior grade is called the power of application; or, having repeatedly practiced through many past lives to achieve the superior grade is called the power of repeated practice; being accomplished by nature from beginningless time is called the power of intrinsic nature; generating superior wholesomeness through exerting effort toward superior fields of merit such as the Three Jewels is called the power of the field and exertion; arising based on that pure body free from desire to achieve the superior grade is called the power of purity.
