Regarding ignorance, it produces seven kinds of unknowing, or nineteen, based on seven matters. In the first category among the seven, it produces three kinds of unknowing, namely unknowing regarding the three times. In the second matter there are also three, namely a self in the six internal bases, what belongs to a self in the external bases, and conceiving both as multiple selves. In the third matter there are also three, namely the three kinds of unknowing regarding karma, retribution, and both. Jing says: Arousing the view of an agent toward karma created; arousing the view of an experiencer toward its vipāka; and arousing both the view of an agent and an experiencer toward karma and vipāka: the characteristics of these three views are called ignorance. Furthermore, they constitute three views of causelessness and wrong causes: positing a self as the agent is called a 'wrong cause'; slandering that there is no proper cause is called 'causelessness.' This merely restates the matters above and does not explain further distinct matters of unknowing.
