Regarding deprecating function, the Abhidharma[samuccaya] says: 'That is, asserting there is no this world, no that world, no mother, no father, and no apparitional sentient beings is called deprecating function.' Here there are three concluding statements: first, deprecating the function of going and coming between different worlds, which is 'this and that world'; second, deprecating the function of sustaining the seed, which is 'father and mother'; third, deprecating the function of continuity, which is 'apparitional sentient beings' here. Therefore, in this treatise's explanation of human function having four kinds, it says: first, going and coming, meaning there is no this or that world; second, the function of holding the womb, meaning the statement that there is no mother; third, deprecating the function of planting the seed, deprecating by saying there is no father; fourth, deprecating the karma of future existence, meaning there are no intermediate-state apparitional sentient beings proceeding from the karma of future existence. This treatise splits father and mother into two, whereas that [treatise] treats them as one.
