Ji says: The seven form [faculties] cannot operate on objects alone; only by having non-form as a companion can they grasp objects. The remaining fourteen faculties have form and non-form as companions. Now, examining the previous explanation of the eighteen realms where one and a fraction of one are able to grasp alone and do not grasp by means of a companion, that refers to mental consciousness; mental consciousness and its mental factors do not rely on the five faculties, hence they are called grasping alone. Now in this text, why does it say the remaining faculties that have objects take form and non-form as companions? The explanation says: The words are general, but the intention is specific. Another explanation says: The previous text spoke of companions in the sense of having the same object, hence mental consciousness was called 'alone'; now this text speaks of companions in the sense of mutual reliance, hence the various faculties that have objects generally rely on form and non-form as companions.
