Now investigating the various explanations, Ji's *Shinyao* [Essentials of Vijñaptimātra] states: 'Regarding this interchange of faculties' functions, there are two different theories. The first master says: "They truly can take all objects as perceptual conditions." The second master explains: "At the site of each individual faculty, all faculties are pervaded and each gives rise to its own function; it is not that a single faculty grasps all objects. Because the functions of the various faculties each pervade all, this is called interchange of functions. Were it not so, the characteristics of dharmas would be destroyed; the mind king would also have to possess the functions of mental factors to apprehend specific [features], and so on." According to the second explanation, even upon reaching the stage of mastery, the eye does not have the functions of the [other] four faculties, nor does earth perform the functions of the other three great elements. This conforms well to this text, being clear and without impediment.'
