13. The section on the three trainings: Nine are open to the three trainings and have the three trainings as their object: namely, the five beginning with faith, joy, pleasure, and equanimity. Seven are neither, and their objects are likewise: namely, the seven physical faculties. One is open to the three kinds and takes neither as its object: this is the faculty of suffering. Previously, based on original nature, it was said to be bound only to desire and taking what is bound to desire as its object. Now, in terms of the three states, it is open to three kinds of objects; because it is induced by the contemplation of emptiness and taintlessness, it is said to be open to them. Grief is not induced by the contemplation of emptiness, so it is not analogous. One is in training and neither, having the three as its object: this is the grief faculty.
