四、明三乘根別，二乘俱學內明，餘不善巧，故名一分任持。悲羂索者，羂不離生死，如馬被羂。

Fourth, clarifying the distinctions among the faculties of the three vehicles: the two vehicles both study inner knowledge (adhyātma-vidyā) and lack skill in the rest, hence this is called 'partial upholding'. 'The lasso of compassion' means that the snare does not leave saṃsāra, just as a horse is snared.
