16.277

前中，通學無學，前五種姓皆為練根，除獨覺菩薩，以利根故，但顯揚云：堪逢唯進者，約度鈍根，故作是說。又對法說：菩薩練根者，約自乘中三品轉增為語故，不違此文。

In the first section: [this applies] generally to both those in training and those beyond training. The first five gotras all refine their faculties, excluding solitary buddhas and bodhisattvas because their faculties are keen. However, the *Prakaraṇāryavācā* says: 'Those who are capable are exclusively progressive'; this is stated with reference to delivering those with dull faculties, and thus it was said in this way. Furthermore, the *Abhidharmasamuccaya* states that bodhisattvas refine their faculties; this is said in reference to the three grades transforming and increasing within their own vehicle, and therefore it does not contradict this text.
