Fifth, explaining that the entity of the nine thorough knowledges and the twenty-two faculties do not subsume each other, because thorough knowledge is the essence of analytical cessation, which is unconditioned, wherein the afflictions and karmas of seeing and cultivation in the three realms are exhausted. Thorough knowledge (*parijñā*) is wisdom. The unconditioned is named after its cause; formerly it was called knowledge of severing. Severing is the fruit of wisdom, hence it is called knowledge of severing. The Lesser treatises say: 'Because of attaining the untainted attainment of severing, and lacking the two causes for the cessation of the peak of existence, and transcending fruitions, the nine thorough knowledges are established.'
