In the text there are two parts: first, explaining the itemized count and the meaning; second, explaining the demarcations. In the former, the sūtra is cited to initiate two gates. 'What is nutriment?' inquires about the essence and number of nutriments; 'How does it nourish the faculties and great elements?' inquires about its meaning as nutriment; the answers to the two questions below can be understood. Below, explaining the demarcations: morsel food entering the belly that does not sustain is not nutriment; likewise, painful contact, volition conjoined with distress and suffering, untainted consciousness, and so forth are also not nutriment.
