Second, distinguishing the sequence of sustaining and nourishment of the four nutriments: morsel food performs its function by first sustaining and benefiting consciousness; because consciousness becomes robust, it can sustain the faculties and great elements, also making them robust. Regarding the statement that 'contact is able to embrace either joy, or pleasure, or a portion of equanimity, etc.': Jing says: the intention of the text is to take only contact conjoined with tainted joy, pleasure, and equanimity as nutriment; embracing the three feelings, it alternately sustains consciousness, and consciousness in turn nourishes the faculties and great elements; this is called contact nutriment. Untainted contact and painful contact are excluded; hence it says 'a portion'.
