Answer: Strictly speaking, concentration and insight always proceed together; moreover, according to the Mahāyāna, tolerance is also called wisdom. When cognizing the eight truths, because the aspiration, seeking, and observant function of tolerance is predominant, tolerance is called insight (vipaśyanā) and explained as eight wisdoms; the eight wisdoms are just the eight tolerances. Because wisdom's function of aspiring to concurrent mental tranquility and concentration is predominant, it is called śamatha, which is just the eight wisdoms; the eight wisdoms are also distinct from the sixteen minds. It is merely that in this text, the meaning of aspiration, seeking, and observation is stronger in the eight tolerances, so they are termed vipaśyanā and spoken of as eight wisdoms; the subsequent eight wisdoms that arise have a stronger function of aspiring to concurrent mental tranquility, and are thus called śamatha. Because the meaning of tranquility is identical, they are collectively spoken of as a single mind. It is merely due to differences in expanding and combining that different designations are established; regarding their intrinsic nature, they are the eight tolerances and eight wisdoms, no different from the other texts.
