Second, in explaining the suppression of afflictions by ordinary beings, Master Jing and others say: Regarding 'if ordinary beings' up to 'adjacent arrogance': the arrogance severed by cultivation does not arise relying on the afflictions severed by seeing, but arises solely relying on the afflictions severed by cultivation; hence it is called 'adjacent arrogance.' It intends to clarify that ordinary beings, solely by means of the defiled path of cultivation, suppress the afflictions of cultivation; having no path of seeing, they do not suppress the afflictions of seeing.
