Third, the 'unfolding of cause and fruit' is explained. Jing says: Afflictions, karma, and rebirth all taking afflictions as their cause means that generating active afflictions from the seeds of afflictions is the productive cause (janaka-hetu); generating active afflictions from active afflictions is the eliciting cause (pravartaka-hetu). When active afflictions generate active karma possessing a causal nature, this is also an eliciting cause. Producing retribution from the seeds of unwholesome afflictions is the pulling cause (ākarṣaka-hetu). There is also the generation of active manifestations from seeds of karma, which is a productive cause. Producing retribution from seeds of wholesome and unwholesome karma is a pulling cause. Generating causal afflictions from active unwholesome karma is also an eliciting cause.
