Third, clarifying the five supreme benefits of cultivating the ten universal bases (kṛtsnāyatana). Jing states: '1. Due to cultivating the contemplation of the eight colors—earth, water, fire, wind, blue, yellow, red, and white—being able to expand and contract with mastery, one can immediately manifest creations out of nothing, or manifest transformations, changing the form and substance of things; 2. due to provisionally cultivating space, first contemplating material form as empty, and later contemplating the four aggregates in the sphere of space as empty and boundless—once the contemplation of the sphere of space is accomplished, one can subsequently pass through rocks and mountains without obstruction; 3. due to repeatedly contemplating consciousness with mastery in expanding and contracting, because of a subtle mind one can induce non-contentiousness (araṇā) and so forth; 4. because this universal base of consciousness is consummated, one can achieve the sphere of nothingness and the liberation of neither-perception-nor-non-perception; 5. because of attaining the liberation of neither-perception-nor-non-perception, one can enter the liberation of cessation. Furthermore, because consciousness has no external universal base, it operates by pervading immeasurably; having pervaded completely through boundless contemplation, the ten universal contemplations are accomplished, and therefore no further universal base contemplations are established above this.'
