The following explains: Because the power of their supernormal abilities is equal, yet what they produce is not identical, the supernormal powers of fire and water regarding the object on this same ground obstruct each other, and neither can succeed, because their formidable power is equal and they cannot overpower each other. Immediately thereafter, at that time, one [of them] has this thought: "Could it be that my concentration has degenerated?" Because this other thought arises, his supernormal power cannot succeed. The second practitioner of concentration exclusively focuses on this objective support and the transformed object without distraction, and therefore whatever he produces is unobstructed. If the formidable power of the two supernormal powers is not equal, it succeeds according to whichever is superior, overpowering the inferior one so that it cannot succeed. If the formidable power of the two supernormal powers is equal, the one who attends first succeeds, and the one who attends later does not succeed. If the two supernormal powers are equal and they simultaneously attend to the same object while their transformations are different, they obstruct each other and neither succeeds.
